Degree in College Student Personnel Administration By Heather Watt |
| |
College Student What? It's a mouthfull and a relatively unknown college degree, but for those who wish to be lifelong students and cannot give up being a co-ed, this master's degree allows you to work in a college or university department. With rising tuition costs and the push for students to be well-rounded with experience in student organizations, campus programming and leadership development are important areas for universities.
If you are a good communicator, enjoy advising your peers and learning about others, this could be the perfect program for you. You will be prepared to work in residence life, student activities, career services, and other student services. The program may be geared toward the type of university you earn your degree at: public or private, large or small. You'll be taught to work with the unique student and faculty population. Most important is the hands-on experience you'll receive through internships and assistantships.
Most programs are full-time, but the courseload is not heavily demanding as students are expected to participate and lead many campus activites. There is a national conference of the American College Personnel Association each year. You'll take classes such as: Diversity in Higher Education, Foundations of Counseling in Student Affairs, and Legal Issues in Higher Education. A final project may be researching and presenting on an aspect of social science in higher education. Many programs have a small number of students so classes are seminar-based and you get to know your classmates very well by working with them on different projects.
Also called a Master's in Higher Education or Master's in Student Affairs, some universities that offer College Student Personnel Administration are: Marquette University Canisius College James Madison University University of West Florida University of Louisville
While receiving your degree, you'll be active in campus programs and clubs, so you'll want to live close to campus. You may be eligible to be a resident assistant or resident director and live on campus for free.
College Student Personnel Administration is a rewarding program that will allow you to showcase your talents, develop your leadership skills, and design your future career tailored to your own interests. You will become a member of a close-knit staff and have the opportunity to coordinate programs that students love. |
