DVD Review: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Benjamin Franklin said, "The only things certain in life are death and taxes." Perhaps the modern collective can add another fixture to that adage.

“No one makes Matthew McConaughey movies quite like Matthew McConaughey.”

For what seems like the million or gazzilioneth time, Matthew McConaughey is starring in yet another romantic comedy that is quite like the other million or gazzillion Matthew McConaughey movies littering the shelf at your local DVD store.

The king of the laid back hunky heart throb, McConaughey, plays Matthew McConaughey…er..Connor Mead. Mead is quite a womanizer, go figure. Seems that Mr. Mead has a problem with commitment in relationships so much so to the point where he’s cold hearted enough to break up with his three girlfriends at the same time via conference call.

Not that it matters one bit, but in this film Matthew and his killer abs are disguised as a photographer. Connor loves the nightlife; he love to boogie; he loves the ladies, and the ladies love him. Actually, the problem for Connor is there’s no real love at all. Seemingly, he loves the quest from one meaningless hook up to the next.

In all seriousness, I started to doze off during the plot development stage of the film and I couldn’t remember if I’d actually seen this film before; it’s that formulaic.

On the eve of his brother’s wedding, Connor is reunited with an old childhood friend portrayed by Jennifer Garner. Jenny is the one woman on the planet who seemingly is the relationship kryptonite to Connor’s superman libido.

Everything changes when he’s visited by his mentor’s ghost. Uncle Wayne takes him, Scrooge style, through a lifetime of relationship horror. Just like a “Christmas Carol”, Connor changes his way just in time to find true love.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past could be a good film. Well, as good as any other Matthew McConaughey movie. This one though earns a very mortal two out of five girlfriends.
