Lanny Davis Wrong Again!

He’s not an official spokesperson for the Democratic Party but the way the media has globed onto Lanny Davis’ recent comments about Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayer you would think that Davis has some relevance or that is opinion mattered.

First and foremost. What Sotomayor said was not offensive, it was not racist nor was she trying to say that Latina Judges make better decisions that White male judges.

The quote in question came from a 2001 speech which she was giving at the University of California, Berkeley conference on law and diversity. Speaking to a mostly female, Latina audience, Sotomayor was speaking about discrimination and women’s issues from which the following quote has been pulled, ““I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

She was not saying that she could and would make better judicial decisions than a white man. What she said was that she hoped, hoped that in cases of discrimination and matters about women that her life experiences would lead her to a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life or had those experiences.

How is this any different than what Ruth Ginsburg, Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito have said about how their experiences govern their decisions? It is no different. Experience do make the person, we are the cumulative total of our experiences. It is the same for you and me and even Sotomayer. Her saying so doesn’t make it wrong, nor does it make her a racist, or a feminist, although that critique hasn’t been leveled yet, it might as well have been.

And for this Lanny Davis wants her to apologize? Why should she apologize? Where is she wrong? And why does Davis feel his opinion matters? Lanny, your time has come and passed. You are not an effective spokesperson, nor are you speaking for the party.

Finally, for the first time that I can remember, the Democratic Party is speaking with a unified voice, except for you. Lanny, please stand down and stop speaking for us, you’re not on message, and quite frankly, you’re just wrong!
